GIFT FOR LIFE BLOCK WALK®
| During the month of October
(or when weather allows), the Affiliate chapters of Sisters
Network Inc. collaborate with organizations and community
groups to coordinate the promotion of breast health awareness
in the African American community through the Gift
for Life Block Walk®. This unique and innovative
program allows breast cancer survivors to partner with volunteers
and canvas door-to-door in the African American community
to distribute breast health education brochures, a resource
list, and pink ribbons. The community has an opportunity
to meet survivors, hear their stories, and experience their
triumph over breast cancer. Every individual reached during
the walk is then invited to the event site where refreshments
are served and breast cancer related agencies exhibit their
resources and services. A mobile unit is provided for
free mammograms at selected affiliate chapters. |

The pink ribbon is the national symbol for breast cancer awareness. The Pink Ribbon Awareness Initiative is a national faith-based educational outreach program that reaches women in church with information on how to access breast care services and resources. The focus of this outreach is to increase the number of women obtaining mammograms and increase their general knowledge. Sisters Network affiliate chapter members and community volunteers disseminate information on breast cancer to African American churches across the United States. SNI members give testimonies as survivor role models to encourage and inspire.
ANNUAL NATIONAL AFRICAN AMERICAN BREAST CANCER CONFERENCE
In 1999, Sisters broke new ground by hosting the nation’s only Annual National African American Breast Cancer Conference which provides a broader scope of knowledge and addresses the breast cancer survivorship crisis affecting the African American woman. With the continuing theme of ‘Celebrating Survivorship’, SNI’s annual conference is held annually and offers CEU and CHES accreditation. The conference focuses on Stopping the Silence, replacing fear with hope, and empowering women through positive messages. Sisters’ looks forward to reaching higher heights by increasing the attendance and visibility of the conference to continue to celebrate survivorship.
