An estimated 19,540 new cases of breast cancer are expected to occur among African American women in 2009

 

The overall incidence rate of breast cancer is 10% lower in African American women than white women.

 

African American women have a five year survival rate of 77% after diagnosis as compared to 90% for white women.

 

The breast cancer mortality rate for African American women is 36% higher than white women

 

Breast cancer incidence rate among younger African American (under 40) is higher than white women.

 

Research shows that aggressive tumor characteristics are more common in African American women than white women.

 

Breast cancer is the second most common cause of cancer death among African American women.

RAISING THE HOUSE

 

 

Raising the House logoIn 2006, Sisters Network Inc. launched the ‘Raising the House’ Campaign. The campaign’s purpose is dedicated to raising $3.5 million dollars.

 

On December 15, 2008, Sisters Network Inc. (SNI) announced the purchase and plans to open the Sister House near Houston's world renowned medical center. SNI plans to use the new facility as the organization's national headquarters, provide sleeping quarter accommodations to breast cancer survivors and their families who come to Houston for advanced medical treatment and to serve as a community information resource and a meeting location to support Sisters Network breast health outreach initiatives on a local and national basis.

 

SNI - Raising the HouseLocated in the Midtown area at 2922 Rosedale Street, approximately 2 miles from Houston's medical center, the two story Sister House main building has 5 rooms, 3 full baths and one half bath, gourmet kitchen for healthy food instruction and oversized garage space. A separate 2 bedroom/ 1 bath apartment with its own kitchen/living room and double garage with a separate entrance to the property.

 

I am so humbled that the vision of opening the Sister House, a warm, inviting and informative facility to educate/empower the African American community about the importance of breast health and to provide accomodations for all breast cancer survivors has become a reality. Sisters Network has made a major impact nationally and locally on the issue of breast cancer, but there is much more work to be done. The Sister House provides a wonderful foundation for our organization reach the next level. We have accomplished Phase One of a three phase vision---we are blessed, " said Karen E.
